The
Adin Supply Company is a landmark that has retained
its presence in the Big Valley area for over 100 years.
Originally known as Roseberry & Knight General Merchandise,
the first mercantile store was built by Roseberry, Knight
and Harvey in 1871. It was located across the street
from where the current Adin Supply resides today. It
was purchased by Harper and Lumas in the early 1900s
and renamed Big Valley Cooperative Association. In 1905
the town experienced a large fire that destroyed many
buildings including the Co-Op. A new store was built
in 1906 on the site where the store now stands.
When the store was first built, the roadbed was several
feet below the porch, enabling wagons to back up for
easy loading and unloading. Frank Harbert was the first
man in Adin to own a car and you can be sure it caused
much todo to see him driving about in his horseless
carriage.
The first highway in the Adin region was built over
Adin Mountain in 1919. In 1922 it was extended through
Round Valley and in 1927 construction on the Big Valley
highway was begun. The passage from Adin to Redding
was not clear until after 1930.
In 1957, Lewis and Ruth Hays purchased Adin Supply.
They operated the store until 1968 when their daughter
Dorothy and her husband Dick Campbell took over the
business. Dick and Dorothy owned the store for 36 years.
In 2004 Dick and Dorothy retired from the business and
sold it to Steve and Julie Gagnon.
Steve and Julie were enamored with this window into
history. Within weeks they had begun to blend the nostalgia
from 100 years ago with the conveniences of today, providing
a full service grocery store for the community that
is also a warm and welcome place to stop and visit.
"We have tried to recreate the 'way it was' by
displaying artifacts from yesteryear all around the
store," says Steve and Julie. "You can walk
down memory lane by checking out old photographs of
previous owners that date back to the early 1900s."
These are displayed on the original wood counter as
well as the scale and display pieces from long ago.
An old Levi Strauss wooden display piece is now used
to attractively disply Adin Supply logo apparel and
giftware.
The floor is original, with only a hint
of a knot in the entire 5,000 square feet. This building
was built when only premium wood was used. The large
windows on the front of the building showcase the beauty
of this grand place.
"In addition to keeping a nostalgic
look to the store, we have tried to create a clean,
neat and beautiful variety of groceries, displayed on
relatively new fixtures. Our old fashioned meat counter
is known for its quality meats and ready-made meals.
Our deli lunch meats are very popular with the locals
as well as the travelers."
Stop by to see why Adin Supply Company is known throughout
the Highway 299 corridor for their delicious deli sandwiches.
